According to a report from Deadline, a final round of negotiations is taking place for Ryan Gosling to star as Ken in the Barbie movie. Warner Bros is set to begin production on the movie next year. If the final round of negotiations go as planned, Ryan Gosling will be joining Margot Robbie for the movie, who is set to play the titular character and Mattel toy, Barbie. Leading the picture as director will be Greta Gerwig. Gerwig also co-wrote the script for the Barbie movie with her partner, Noah Baumbach, who is also a successful writer and director.
In the report, Deadline writer Justin Kroll mentions that Gosling initially declined the part of Ken. However, the studio insisted on Gosling for the role. Naturally, when an opening in his schedule was made available, they went after him. So far, sources say they appear to be successful in getting Ryan Gosling to star as Ken.
Although not much is known about the Barbie movie, the cast and crew should reassure fans of the iconic Mattel character. Both Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have made Academy Award-nominated films. Gerwig, specifically, is known for making great films with nuanced, mold-breaking female characters. With that mind, it is safe to assume Margot Robbie’s version of Barbie will be unlike any fans of the character have seen before.
Margot Robbie recently starred in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, reprising her fan-favorite role as Harley Quinn. However, Robbie has also found success playing more serious roles, including in The Wolf of Wall Street, I, Tonya, and Mary Queen of Scots. Whether the role is serious or more comedic, there is no doubt Margot Robbie has what it takes to nail it.
