Of all of Nintendo’s cherished franchises, The Legend of Zelda must be the one that generates the most hype and highest expectations. Since the reveal of the Breath of the Wild sequel, we haven’t heard anything about the game, or when it will release. Well, now there’s an interesting rumor that’s making its way around gaming sites and forums regarding the release date and even the game’s title!

Rumors?

Of course, take this rumor with a huge pinch of salt because it’s probably fake, but it’s fun to speculate anyway. Apparently, the new Zelda game will be titled The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Darkness, and will follow link and Zelda through a darker version of Hyrule. In my opinion, the name really works and fits what you’d expect a Zelda sequel to be called. We know that Ganondorf is returning for the first time since Zelda: Twilight Princess and carrying over part of the name from the original seems like something Nintendo would do.

The other part of the rumor is that the game will release in late 2020 or early 2021. This is as expected so nothing really new there. The same assets and physics system are being used from the original, so we could be closer to the release than people think. It would be a huge coup for Nintendo to surprise audiences and release within three months of the title reveal. Maybe after the January direct. The Switch is on a roll and the more AAA titles that release, the more sales records it’ll break.

Darker Zelda Game?

The trailer for the game looked much darker than the original and followed Link and Zelda through a cave or underground labyrinth. The green, swirling mist seemed to be pushing back the red malice from the original. While we know very little about the game, Aonuma San has said the game will be even darker than Majora’s Mask, although the Zelda creators don’t see Majora’s Mask as a dark game. At least not in the same way as Twilight Princess.
