Rick Moranis is coming out of semi-retirement to reprise his role in the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel. Speculation about the actor’s return has now been confirmed.
Moranis, known for Ghostbusters, Spaceballs, SCTV, and more, liked Disney’s pitch for the sequel currently titled Shrunk. Disney was originally going to make it a Disney+ exclusive but decided on a theatrical release after reading Todd Rosenberg’s script.
Rick Moranis starred in the original movie back in 1989, as well as the 1992 sequel “Honey, I Blew Up the Kid, and the direct-to-video third entry “Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.” It was after this that Moranis semi-retired in order to focus on his family. With the Death of his wife in 1991, Moranis wanted to spend less time in the Hollywood spotlight and more on raising his family. Aside from some voice work here and there, Moranis has mostly kept to himself for more than twenty years.
The new movie will star Josh Gad (a recent Disney favorite) as Moranis’ now grownup son. Gad’s character would be an inventor like his old man and build another shrink ray that accidentally shrinks his family. The father and son dynamic are most likely what brought Moranis back into the fold.
Moranis turned down an opportunity to be in the 2016 Ghostbusters. He did, however, reprise his beloved Spaceballs role for a 2018 episode of the Goldbergs and will appear in an upcoming Netflix documentary about SCTV.
Original director Joe Johnston is also returning to helm the sequel. It will be the first time the famed director has been a part of the series since the original. With Johnston in the director’s chair and Rick Moranis coming back, Shrunk could be a fun and entertaining romp.
