The development team behind critically acclaimed horror game Detention, Red Candle Games, is stepping away from the horror genre with their new work-in-progress, Nine Sols.

In a tweet released earlier this week, Red Candle Games announced the title of the game along with concept art. They said Nine Sols is inspired by From Software’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. It is “a lore rich hand-drawn 2D action platformer with Sekiro-inspired deflection-focused combat. Embark on a journey of Asian fantasy, explore the land once home to an ancient alien race & follow a vengeful hero’s quest to slay 9 Sols, rulers of a forsaken realm”.

This isn’t the first time fans have seen Nine Sols. Earlier this year, the development team posted a 12-second clip that showed off its colorful 2D art style and a short build-up to a fight.

In 2017, Red Candle Games released their first game, Detention, to extremely high praise. It follows a trapped high schooler as they try to solve the mysteries behind their cursed school. Their next game, Devotion, was released in 2019 to similar praise. However, it was taken down a week after its release due to poor reviews from Chinese citizens due to art assets in the game likening Chinese President Xi Jinping to Winnie the Pooh. This past year, Devotion became available on Red Candle’s own website for purchase.

As of this writing, there is no word on a release window for Nine Sols or what platforms it will be available on. However, if it follows the same track as Detention, Nine Sols could be available on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC, and mobile devices.
