Ernest Cline has revealed that his sequel novel, Ready Player Two, is getting a movie adaptation. However, it is still in the early stages of development. Cline recently spoke to Inverse about the book and said the following:

Warner Bros. has given no official statement on the production of the sequel. But it isn’t at all surprising to hear one is on the way. 2018’s Ready Player One, based on Cline’s 2011 novel, was fairly successful in terms of box office numbers. It ended its run with a little more than $580 million worldwide on a budget of $175 million. It also holds a 72% score on RottenTomatoes.

What to Know About Ready Player Two

Steven Spielberg directed the movie adaptation of Ready Player One, which reportedly took around 8 years to make. It is incredibly unlikely the sequel would take nearly as long. But there is no word on whether or not Spielberg will return. However, as far as the lead actors are concerned, both Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke should be expected to come back. Earlier this year, Sheridan expressed interest in returning for a sequel. And Cooke has stated she is contracted to appear in any sequels should they be made.

Cline released Ready Player Two this past November after working on it since 2017. It picks up close to where the first book left off after Wade won Halliday’s contest and became the owner of the OASIS. It follows his discovery of technology never released by Halliday, called the Oasis Neural Interface, which allows users to experience the OASIS with all five senses and record their experiences in real life. And, as is fitting for the sequel, a new riddle appears, leading Wade on another quest.
