PUBG Lite, the free-to-play and lower-spec version of the popular battle royale game PUBG, will be shut down later on April 29, Krafton announced. PUBG Lite debuted as a beta launch in Thailand in January 2019. As its name suggests, this “spin-off” was created for both smartphones and PCs that aren’t beefy enough to play the standard version of PUBG. Nevertheless, it still contains all the important meat and bones, just with less-than-stellar visuals. Here’s what the company has to say regarding the termination of the game.
We are deeply grateful for the passion and support from the astounding number of PUBG LITE fans that have been with us. During the strenuous times of the COVID-19 pandemic, we hope that PUBG LITE was able to provide our fans a fun way to stay safe.
Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to close service after much deliberation and the time has come for our journey to end. We regretfully inform you that service of PUBG LITE is scheduled to end on April 29th, 2021 (UTC).“
The PUBG Lite shut down will be done in three steps:
- March 30th, 2021 (UTC): The official site, lite.pubg.com, was closed down and new downloads of the game will no longer be available.
- April 29th, 2021 05:00 (UTC): End of service.
- May 29th, 2021 (UTC): Customer service support for PUBG Lite will no longer be available.
The signs might’ve been seen since November last year. Aside from the fact that after two years of development PUBG Lite is still in open beta, Krafton was also turning PUBG Lite into a “100% free game” by terminating the L-COIN cash top-up system. As of December 15, all payment top-up channels were closed. After that point, all in-game content and items will be free of charge, only acquirable through in-game currencies such as Chicken Medal, Silver Bullet, and BP. But you can still use any leftover L-COINs to purchase items from the Store even after the termination of the top-up system.
